About the Game

What is this game?
Minecraft: Story Mode is an adventure game set in a Minecraft world. It is a five-part episodic series that will take you to the Nether, the Farlands, the End, and beyond! You will drive how the story flows through the decisions you make: what you say to people (and how you say it), and what you choose to do in moments of thrilling action.
What’s the story?
You are Jesse. He and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers that slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order are the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.
Will there be crafting and exploration?
Though you won’t be able to just start digging, or chasing the next pig you see, Minecraft: Story Mode will take these beloved elements of Minecraft and – through your choices – incorporate them to tell your Minecraft story. Minecraft: Story Mode is like a playable television show, based on your favorite game, where YOU are the star, and your choices decide how the story is told.
What age group is this game series aimed at?
Minecraft: Story Mode will be a game series that Minecraft fans young and old will enjoy. However, please refer to the ratings system in your territory to determine if this game series is right for you.
How does the game work?
If you’ve played Telltale’s other recent games, you’ll have a good idea of the choice-based gameplay you’ll enjoy in Minecraft: Story Mode. If you’re new to Telltale and our games, the story you experience is driven by the choices that YOU make. You’ll make decisions about what to say (or not to say) in dialog with other characters, and this, along with physical choices in moments of action, will alter the flow of the story, meaning that the game you experience could be very different from someone else’s.
I can change the story?
Yes. Our games constantly present you with choices that can change the game right in that very moment, or later in the episode or series. Telltale’s games are about making decisions, and then living with the consequences.
How is Mojang involved in the production of this game?
Mojang is the developer that created and owns Minecraft. They are Telltale’s partners, licensing the rights to create a story-driven game based on Minecraft to us. Through a fun partnership where ideas, art, and more, bounce back and forth, they collaborate with Telltale to ensure that Minecraft: Story Mode is something that fans of Minecraft will enjoy.
Who provides the voices for the characters in the game?
Our cast includes Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), Brian Posehn, (The Sarah Silverman Program, Mission Hill), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us, Tales from the Borderlands), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights, X-Men) Martha Plimpton (The Goonies, Raising Hope), Dave Fennoy (The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series, Batman: Arkham Knight), Corey Feldman (The Goonies, Stand by Me), Billy West (Futurama, Adventure Time), and Paul Reubens (Tron: Uprising, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse) with more to be announced!
Do I need to have played Minecraft to enjoy this game series?
You can play and enjoy Minecraft: Story Mode without having played Minecraft, but you will definitely get the maximum amount of enjoyment out of Story Mode if you’re familiar with the game that started it all!
Do I need to own Minecraft to play Story Mode?
No, Minecraft: Story Mode does not require the ownership of Minecraft; they are separate games.
Is this game difficult to play? What are the controls like?
Our games are designed to allow almost anyone to play (rating allowing), regardless of their experience with games. The difficulty comes not in mastering the controls, but in making challenging decisions with far-reaching consequences.
How many episodes are in the season?
There are five episodes planned for Minecraft: Story Mode. Episodes are made available via download.
Why is this game episodic? What does that mean?
Telltale has a history of releasing episodic games – our development philosophy is built around this and it’s something that makes us different from most other developers. Like many story-based TV shows, the game will tell a complete story arc over the course of a season. We will periodically release one episode at a time until all 5 episodes are available and the first season is complete.
Do I buy each episode individually?
You can buy each episode individually, or you can buy a ‘Season Pass’ that, depending on your games system, will either grant access to all episodes as they become available, or will include episodes 2 to 5 as they become available. The purchase of a Season Pass usually means that you will save money over buying individual episodes.
How much do episodes and Season Passes cost?
This varies by your games platform and territory. Please check the online store of your preferred games system for more information.
Is this game series available to buy on disc?
We usually release a full season on disc, or other retail format, sometime after the final episode is made available to download. Telltale is a ‘digital-first’ company.
How long is each episode?
It varies by player, but most people finish an episode in around 2 hours.
Is there multiplayer?
No. However, we’ve found that many people like to play ‘together’ and enjoy the episode as a group, much like when watching a TV show or movie.
Which games systems is this game series available for?
Minecraft: Story Mode will be released on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, compatible iOS devices (e.g., iPad), Android, and Amazon Fire TV. It will be made available first as a digital download, and then, at a later date and where platform permits, as a physical disc at your favorite retailer.
What other games has Telltale Games developed?
Telltale’s current hit games include The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, and Game of Thrones.
